You are invited to the launch of Guy Ngan, published by The Dowse Art Museum, Te Awakairangi Lower Hutt. This extensive publication that celebrates the work and life of Guy Ngan was made possible with the generous support of The Dowse Foundation and Creative New Zealand.
Guy Ngan was published on the occasion of the exhibitions Guy Ngan: Habitation at The Dowse Art Museum from 17 May to 15 September 2019, curated by Sian van Dyk, and Guy Ngan: Either Possible or Necessary at Artspace Aotearoa from 7 June to 17 August 2019, curated by Remco de Blaaij and Lachlan Taylor.
During the launch there will be a conversation between Liz Ngan, Sian Van Dyk and Remco De Blaaij chaired by Lachlan Taylor. Light refreshment will also be provided.
Liz Ngan (顏美杏) is a librarian, researcher and writer with a background in information technology and NZ Chinese history. As Guy’s daughter, she grew up with many of his artworks and stories. Since 2017, she has been organising and maintaining his creative works and information archive.
Sian van Dyk has been a curator at The Dowse Art Museum since 2013. Her recent curatorial projects include Guy Ngan Habitation, The Language of Things: Meaning and Value in Contemporary Jewellery; Maureen Lander: Flat Pack Whakapapa; Richard Stratton: Living History; Seraphine Pick: White Noise; Peter Peryer: A Careful Eye and Cut and Paste: The Practice of Collage. She has written for The Journal of Modern Craft (UK), Arnoldsche (DE), Art New Zealand, Art News New Zealand, The Dowse, The Sarjeant Gallery and Enjoy Gallery. In 2015 van Dyk was the recipient of the Creative New Zealand Craft/Object Art Curator to Munich award.
Remco de Blaaij Is the Director of Artspace Aotearoa. Remco came to Artspace Aotearoa from the position of Senior Curator at the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, where he had worked since 2012. He worked on the team of Be(com)ing Dutch, a two-year elaborate project in the museum that dealt with residues of globalisation, national identity and immigration. In 2011, he concluded his research at the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths University with the publication too little, too late, which focused on border practices of visual culture against the background of Suriname, South America. In 2013 he was recipient of the CPPC/ICI Travel Grant for Central America and the Caribbean. At CCA he curated The Shock of Victory, an exhibition in reaction to the Independence Referendum in Scotland in 2014.
