Join us for an afternoon conversation with Anne Szefer Karlsen, Professor in Curatorial Practice at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen. Szefer Karlsen will be giving a talk about on the Freyberg Place stairs at 2pm, following a walking tour through Tāmaki Makaurau.
Szefer Karlsen is coming to Aotearoa as the first visiting participant in The Drift - Kōrewa , a new curatorial education platform distributed by Artspace Aotearoa in collaboration with partners throughout Aotearoa New Zealand and the international arts community. The Drift - Kōrewa is a non-academic programme geared to developing high-level curatorial, cultural, and artistic advancement.
In 2020, Artspace Aotearoa is launching The Drift - Kōrewa as a pilot programme, discovering how it might work and what it can achieve. The aim is to share knowledge, collaborate and develop the social fabric between art centres, museums, commercial galleries, academies, artist-run spaces, advocacy groups and individuals as well as advancing Aotearoa New Zealand’s image as a base for world-class artistic production. Through annual research themes, the programme brings together knowledge on Tāmaki Makaurau and Aotearoa New Zealand as a place to live and work within the cultural sector.
Artspace Aotearoa has invited two Associates to take part in this first iteration of The Drift - Kōrewa. Tosh Ahkit and Maia Abraham will be working with international collaborators like Karlsen in 2020 to develop The Drift - Kōrewa into a fully formed programme.
Anne Szefer Karlsen is a curator, writer, editor, Professor in Curatorial Practice at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen (2015–2021) and Senior Adviser at Bergen Assembly (2018–2020). Director of Hordaland Art Centre in Bergen, Norway (2008–14).
Szefer Karlsen is currently researching for a curatorial project with the working title ‘Opplevelser av oljen’ (Experiences of the oil) for Stavanger Art Museum (autumn 2021), and has previously acted as curator for The Norwegian Sculpture Biennale 2015 entitled ‘Art Belongs to Those Who See it’ at the Vigeland Museum in Oslo; curator for Lofoten International Art Festival – LIAF 2013 (with Bassam el Baroni and Eva González-Sancho) entitled ‘Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy?’ and Associate Curator for Research and Encounters for Biennale Bénin 2012 – ‘Inventer le monde: l’artiste citoyen’ (artistic director: Abdellah Karroum).
Szefer Karlsen's writing has appeared in journals such as Afterall, Billedkunst, Kunstjournalen B-post, kunstkritikk.no and in anthologies such as ‘Plasticity of the Planet: On Environmental Challenge for Art and Its Institutions’ (Mousse Publishing, Mediolan and Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, 2019), ‘Of(f) Our Times: Curatorial Anachronics’ (Sternberg Press, 2019), ‘Making Biennials in Contemporary Times’ (Biennial Foundation/ICCo – Instituto de Cultura Contemporânea, 2015) and ‘Condition Report’ (Hatje Cantz, 2013). Szefer Karlsen was editor for the artis monography ‘Ingrid Lønningdal–10’ (Teknisk Industri, 2019), series editor for ‘Dublett’, a book series featuring artists’ works through anthologies and artists’ books (Hordaland Art Centre, 2012–2016), and co-editor of ‘Self-Organised’ (Open Editions/Hordaland Art Centre, 2013) and ‘Lokalisert/Localised’ (Ctrl+Z Publishing, 2009).
